After much thought, we decided to put the perspective section on hiatus. It is impossible to give an accurate 'perspective' with an industry which is so very clouded by tariffs, duties and bonds which are not fair and are not universally applied.
We will - for the immediate future - not be posting our thoughts or opinions here.
PLEASE NOTE: However, you will still might post 'guest perspectives.' that we would agree with which would reflect our opinion at the time of publishing, as we see fit. These will be done ad hoc and not on a monthly basis as previously. So keep your eyes open.
We at Premium Seafood deplore the current state of what can only be described as 'non-free trade' which has become a reality of the seafood business. We are specifically upset about how the shrimp business has been impacted by the tariff situation. We strongly oppose the tariffs as well as the Bryd Amendment which we see as the impetus behind the current anti-dumping duty.
We vigorously agree with the National Fisheries Institute who states:
"NFI Action: NFI
strongly opposes the Byrd Amendment and has endorsed H.R. 1121, legislation
pending consideration before the House of Representatives designed to repeal the
onerous Byrd Amendment because of the barrier to free trade that it creates.
NFI’s government relations team continues coordinate lobbying and communications
outreach efforts with other industry groups in order to influence the opinions
of our nations’ lawmakers in favor of more fair trade practices and against the
Byrd Amendment.
Fishing is the World's Next Resource War"
Are there those who go around the tariff by redirecting shipments of product from countries with duties to those without? We don't know. What we do know is that without free trade, there is a strong undercurrent of unfair competition, as well as the inability for all those who wish to ply their trade in the seafood business to operate on an even playing field. Tariffs unfairly bias the super large companies at the expense of those who work within the rules.
We feel that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to publish clear judgments vis-à-vis the marketplace with this artificial instrument which has been put in place by those with a 'special interest' itinerary. These tariffs very clearly effect the free market economy which had been part and parcel of the seafood industry.
We are keeping current with the technical ramifications as posted in our anti-dumping section.
Also, please feel free to read past perspectives which are archived below.
Until the tariffs are lifted, and the Byrd amendment repealed, the authors of this perspective have...
